Winter Warmth and Safety Campaign 2024

Spring is upon us, but before we say goodbye to Winter 2024, we wanted to share some of the lives you've helped us to touch! Thanks to generous foundations and support from individuals to our Winter Warmth & Safety campaign, we have been able to tackle 14 Critical Pro Repair projects for struggling nearby families so far.

Winter Warmups

Very few cases are as troubling as a financially compromised family with no recourse to restore heat to their home. Our grantors and those who responded to our end of year campaign enabled us to deliver warmth to a number of homes in need this Winter. One of them belonged to Denise, a hardworking Stamford woman in her 60s who cares for a sister around the same age. Denise’s sister is plagued with acute mobility issues, spina bifida and kidney disease. Denise also puts a roof overhead for her son and her brother. This household struggled enough without a further issue of no heat. Luckily, Denise reached out to HomeFront. We delivered space heaters while we diagnosed the problem. After working our heating and plumbing contacts, we cobbled together support from the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority (CHFA), an anonymous donation and individual donations. Check out these images of Denise’s boiler before and after our Winter Warmup.

Safety & Peace of Mind

Another memorable stop on our Winter Warmth & Safety campaign took us to the home of Grissel in Hartford. Four out of the six members of Grissel’s household contend with some form of disability. Grissell is a 46-year-old single mom with two daughters (ages 17 & 13), as well as three sons, ranging from five-to-12 years-old. Grissel has Lupus and suffered a brain aneurysm. All three of her sons have disabilities. Her son with the most severe impairments lived in a room with broken drafty windows. HomeFront skilled staff were able to replace these windows and re-build a dangerous entryway thanks to support from the Travelers Foundation and our individual donors. We wanted to bring you the smiles on their faces and showcase the work that this support made possible.

Compassion Springs Forward

For every single family like Denise’s and Grissell’s, HomeFront has 10 more qualified nearby families awaiting our help. So many of us contemplate Spring Cleaning this time of year while many of our neighbors inhabit homes with serious safety and health risks. Very simple fixes, for example, can prevent falls for our growing population of older adults.

With more Critical Pro Repair projects in the works and our upcoming 35th annual Spring HomeFront Day in May, we are eager to carry the momentum forward. Our goal is to assist 40 more neighbors in need this Spring and Summer. We are fighting the good fight to keep the stubbornly inflated cost of construction materials and services from limiting the number of homes we revitalize. If you have been unable to make a donation yet this year, a gift of any amount could not possibly be timelier than now. Every dollar contributed makes an enormous difference right in your backyard with a program as lean as HomeFront. Our expertise in linking up acts of kindness and generosity doubles our impact. We cannot wait to keep you updated from the homes where, together, we will bring many more smiles to the faces of our most at-risk neighbors this Spring and Summer.
