HomeFront Day 2017
HomeFront Launches Campaign to Revitalize 60 Homes for Low-Income Families on Sat., May 6th
April 31 — 1,800 local residents kick off this year’s campaign to revitalize 60 homes for low-income CT families, beginning with the 30th annual HomeFront Day on Sat., May 6th. This year’s annual tradition unites volunteers from faith communities, civic groups and corporations across 22 cities. Local older adults living on fixed incomes, single-parent households, disabled homeowners and low-income families eagerly await relief from the deterioration of their homes—all delivered at no cost to them. The “Graying of America” confronts states like CT with growing numbers of older adults whose incomes are stretched beyond the reach of major repairs to their homes. By the year 2035, one-in-three households will be headed by someone over the age of 65. A slowly recovering economy forces residents of every age to make difficult decisions over which basics to forego. The deferred maintenance stemming from this finds many CT homes in severe disrepair. Many of this year’s beneficiaries are families who have spent much of their lives making their world a better place, especially 10 homes belonging to veterans who have bravely served our nation. For a second year, HomeFront is proud to join The Home Depot Foundation (THDF) in giving back to veterans. The Home Depot has committed to invest $250 million by 2020 to improve the homes and lives of U.S. military veterans and their families. As Veteran Housing Grant Manager of The Home Depot Foundation, Erica Headlee describes, “Too many of our veterans and their families face major housing challenges, aggravated by issues like unemployment, age and service-related disabilities.”
HomeFront is a community-based program dedicated to providing quality of life improvements to families with financial hardships. Since 1988, HomeFront volunteers have repaired 3,000 homes, injecting nearly $50 million of assistance where it is needed most.
