Local Corporation Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Special Way

Hologic volunteers

Stamford, October 13, 2015 — Dozens of volunteers from Hologic’s Danbury location kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness month by fixing up a home in Sandy Hook for Katherine, a low-income, breast cancer survivor and her husband, Bernard. This leading, international developer of diagnostic products, imaging systems and surgical products teamed up with HomeFront, a community-based program headed into its 29th year of organizing volunteers to make crucial repairs for local families with financial hardship at no cost to them. By the end of their work day, Hologic volunteers had overhauled a set of highly dangerous steps, undertaken deck repairs, cleaned gutters and tackled a massive landscaping makeover for this couple. When surveying his home after the work was done, Bernard, a Korean War veteran said, “This is fantastic. I used to enjoy doing this sort of work when I was younger but it got beyond me.”

HomeFront’s Executive Director, Sean O’Brien, had this to say, “We were so grateful to be able to assist this couple who have spent more than 20 years in Sandy Hook. Hologic volunteers carried the same attention to detail and enthusiasm that has epitomized their success in women’s health to this powerful community improvement effort.”

The core business units for Massachusetts-based Hologic, Inc. focus on diagnostics, breast health, GYN surgical, and skeletal health. Known for their focus on women’s health, Hologic’s Genius 3D Mammography has been clinically proven to reduce callbacks by up to 40 percent and detect 41 percent more invasive cancers than traditional 2D mammography.

The collective compassion of hands on volunteers, product contributors, foundations and other donors brings HomeFront to the mark of 2,870 homes revitalized in program history, delivering $50 million of service where it is needed most. HomeFront is a community-based program dedicated to keeping low-income homeowners in their homes with an improved quality of life through substantial repairs completed at no cost to them.
