Stamford, CT, May 2 — As the toll of the Great Recession continues to challenge local residents, 3,000 area volunteers prepare to deliver extensive repair assistance at no cost to 57 low-income families and seven community centers on Saturday, May 7th. More than 30 nearby cities are included in a 24th annual HomeFront Day designed to keep financially struggling families in their homes with a dramatically improved quality of life. Behind the numbers of those urgently awaiting this life-changing gift are the many older adults surviving on fixed incomes, single-parent households, disabled homeowners and families fighting to hold onto their homes amidst record job losses. Volunteers performing the repairs, program organizers and the homeowners who benefit are available for interviews.
According to HomeFront’s Board Chair, Ken Wiegand, “When people are counting on our service the most, we are awed by the generosity of donors and volunteers who continue to give back even as their own resources have been undermined by the very same economic downturn.” By the end of HomeFront Day 2011, this tradition of generosity figures to have provided nearly $40 million of services to more than 2,500 neighboring families in need.
Among the 70 participating faith-based, civic and corporate groups, experts from the multi-Emmy award-winning This Old House television series will be rolling up their sleeves, demonstrating a conviction in the importance of decent shelter and the power of volunteerism. Master carpenter Norm Abram, general contractor Tom Silva and plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey are teaming up with colleagues to remedy a host of repair concerns for a deserving, multi-generational home in Norwalk (23 Ivy Place).
HomeFront’s mission is to keep low-income neighbors in their homes with an improved quality of life through the completion of repairs at no cost to them. HomeFront is an independent program that formerly operated under the auspices of the humanitarian aid organization AmeriCares. More information can be found online at www.homefrontprogram.org
