Heroes of HomeFront
On the following pages, we feature the true “Heroes of HomeFront.” These are the individuals who volunteer as part of a HomeFront team and who give selflessly of themselves for an entire day to help a neighbor in need. More than two dozen teams have volunteered for at least a decade or more on behalf of the HomeFront program.
Pauline is a perfect example of why so many caring individuals give so much of themselves year after year. While Pauline was struggling to take care of Gene and Jackie, her aging parents who face serious health issues, she suffered an acute multiple sclerosis exacerbation. As a middle-aged adult, she had to learn how to speak and walk all over again. When we first met Pauline, she was understandably very stressed. Two months after her HomeFront project, the clutter in and around her home had been cleared and she and her parents had some basic amenities, including a wheelchair ramp. Pauline’s wonderful sense of humor and optimism had returned, and she credits the HomeFront program with having restored her sense of hope.
Both Pauline, who currently uses a four-wheel walker, and her dad, who uses a walker, can now venture outdoors in their rural community, enjoying the fresh air and sunshine once again. This simple act that so many of us take for granted has given both of them a tremendous amount of joy. In turn, it renews Jackie’s spirit to know that her husband and daughter are now able to find some enjoyment amid their day-to-day struggles.
The teams that assist homeowners like Pauline and her family embody the spirit of the program. They understand that HomeFront helps to transform lives—homes are merely the vehicle. HomeFront raises spirits and restores hope for those who are struggling to meet basic day-to-day needs while everything around them seems to be falling apart.
