HomeFront Kicks Off Campaign to Revitalize 70 Homes for Low-Income Families on Sat., May 2nd

April 23, 2015 — “Snowmageddon 2015” gives way to a major warm front on Sat May 2nd in the form of 2,500 local volunteers poised to revitalize 70 homes for low-income families throughout much of CT and Westchester County, NY. This 28th annual HomeFront Day features volunteers from all walks of life, straddling a wide spectrum of repair skills, but united by a desire to give back at no cost to the recipients. More than 60 local corporate, faith-based and civic groups are taking part, backed by the financial support of foundations, individuals, as well as generous product donations from building suppliers and pro bono services from building trades professionals.

This “hands on” outpouring is perfectly timed for a climate in which broad economic progress somehow coexists with record-breaking levels of requests for help from local older adults subsisting only on social security, single-parent households, veterans, disabled homeowners and families in transitional crisis due to illness and un- or under-employment. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 5.3 million U.S families live in homes classified as “severely or moderately inadequate.” A startling 23.4 million live in homes defined by the CDC as “unhealthy.” Those brave enough to ask for help can expect to find after-effects of the past brutal winters addressed: leaky roofs repaired, crumbling steps stabilized, pipes reinforced, drafty windows replaced in addition to wheel chair ramp installations and other substantial, quality of life repairs.

Among the low-income families finding relief, 20 victims of SuperStorm Sandy will finally find their homes made whole again as a result of the American Red Cross partnership with HomeFront and their long-term housing recovery commitment. This catapults HomeFront to nearly 60 Sandy-damaged homes restored since the storm struck.

The collective compassion of hands on volunteers, product contributors, foundations and other donors brings HomeFront to the mark of 2,870 homes revitalized in program history, delivering $50 million of service where it is needed most. HomeFront is a community-based program dedicated to keeping low-income homeowners in their homes with an improved quality of life through substantial repairs completed at no cost to them.
